Among a crowd of Moral Monday protesters arrested at the Georgia Capitol on Monday was state Senator Vincent Fort, who’s been no stranger to controversy as of late.
The group is in town for the General Assembly session to urge the state to expand its Medicaid rolls under Obamacare, a move backed by Peach State Democrats but opposed by Governor Nathan Deal and Republicans.
Assembled inside Deal’s office, the protesters were warned by police to move outside by 5 p.m. Those who stayed were arrested, including Fort.
The Atlanta Democrat sparked a firestorm of criticism earlier this month when he decried the selection of a white political operative to head up the day to day operations of the Democratic Party of Georgia.
“When you have a chairman who is white and executive director who is white, that rich diversity is not reflected,” he told the AJC at the time.
The operative in question is Rebecca DeHart, who’s won national awards and praise for her work in Democratic politics.
Despite the protests, Deal has maintained opposition to Medicaid expansion.
